When I was first approached with the prospect of recording an EP as a leader for Cellar Music, I was ecstatic. Finally, I would have the opportunity to document what my time in New York City has taught me about playing music.

I knew immediately that I would like to devote a substantial portion of the EP to the format I find myself in the majority of the time: Guitar, Bass, and Drums. I’ve been admiring Alexander Claffy and Jimmy Macbride since hearing them in high school and was honored that they agreed to join me in this recording. I also wanted to give myself the opportunity to be supported by chordal accompaniment for two of my songs and was delighted to feature Aaron Goldberg on piano as a special guest. I first saw Aaron play at the Newport Jazz Festival with Kurt Rosenwinkel when I was 16, and being able to record some of my music with him was a dream come true.

Matthew Rotker-Lynn is quickly becoming a distinctive voice within the New York Jazz scene. At age 26, he has already played at top jazz venues in the country with some of the scene's foremost musicians. Upon moving to New York at 18, Rotker-Lynn studied with musicians such as Peter Bernstein, Steve Wilson, and Ray Gallon.
